New Year, Same Old Me?
So it is 2009. And once again, I’m looking to change myself. This is getting really old. Is there anything that is going to really change my commitment to health and weight loss this year? Anything that will make me stick to whatever my goals are? Just when I was beginning to doubt it, a thought hit me. I am not sure of many things, but one thing is certain: to remain alive, one needs self-renewal and reaffirmation. We all hit walls in our lives that require time to think, time to reprogram, time to process. What makes a resilient person different from one who crumbles when he hits a wall is the grace and wisdom to reshape themselves by taking that injury and making something of it.
Another thing struck me: as I embark on a new career and my 30th year on this planet, my desire for change in myself is about more than losing weight or changing my appearance. I need to gain control in my own life. My existence requires not only reaffirmation, but a steady hand guiding it from moment to moment. I have faced enough obstacles to know that being forced to make a move out of necessity and frustration is no way to live, even though it is a part of life at times.
My lack of control is directly reflected in my physical appearance. Somehow, though, I won’t leave the house without mascara or blush unless I am depressed or feeling frazzled. What does this say about me? I think it says that those subtle ways of making myself seem more attractive are actually projections of my own feeling of being in control, being “put together.” It is simple to understand: When I leave the house without mascara, I look less awake, less “happy,” and more like I’m letting life get to me. It is easy enough to put on mascara before I walk out of the door, this is a small step I can take to *seem* more in control of my own life. Why do I care if I seem more in control? Because the first step to making it is faking it. Before you can believe that you will win, you have to believe that you have the stamina to start.
This year I am again doing what I can to reduce my instinct to reach for food when I’m frustrated, to take my anger out on an elliptical instead of by sleeping or turning inward, and to get closer to being in control of my life as a whole.
I hope to once again chronicle some of that experience here.

GREAT BOOK!!! 4 Hour Work Week
I have been reading some great books lately and thought I would share one with you because it is that good. I highly recommend that you drop everything right now and go to Amazon or wherever you buy books and get the 4 Hour Work Week. In fact, I think I’ll post a link to it if I can figure out how.
I am not going to say that you should apply every tactic described in the book, but you definitely want to read that book. I am a habitual scardy-cat, and this book was just the kick in the pants I needed to remember that fear is a 4 letter word. And everyone who knows me knows I use enough 4 letter words and don’t need to add this to the lot.
Go get this book. Read it over night. Change your outlook on life.

Cool Political Video
I’ve classified this under shopping because I think picking a political candidate is a lot like buying a cheap pair of shoes. Even when they are super cute and comfy, you have a sinking suspicion that the heel might break off right when you need them. I am not advocating Obama but I thought this was a great example of celebrity being used for a good purpose.

Podfitness.com Customized Workouts with Trainers
I have just discovered hands down the coolest thing since iPods for working out. At Podfitness.com I have been able to download full-length, trainer-led workouts set to my own music - with a different workout for every day of the week. I’m telling you, this thing is awesome!!
It costs 5 dollars a month, and requires you to have music on your computer that has no DRM, but these are small prices to pay to have a trainer breathing down your ear for basically pennies a day. Granted, the workouts aren’t customized in the same way a workout with an actual trainer would be - the Podfitness trainers have no way of knowing your body or your strengths and weaknesses, but it comes pretty darn close. sluggish day for dieting
It has been a while since I updated this blog with my own weight loss journey. Today was not a great day for the diet. I did not go to the gym and had a serious meat craving so had potbelly for lunch.
Don’t get me wrong; I actually don’t mind potbelly because the calories are not bad, the price is right, and their sandwiches are filling and delicious. Nonetheless, I am potbelly sick tonight - I feel terrible and uber bloated.
This just goes to show that fast food is doing the body in. After a few weeks of eating homemade whole foods - just don’t think my belly was up for the challenge of processed meat and hot peppers!
I also had a LOT of sunflower and pumpkin seeds today, which may also be adding to the belly ache. I don’t know what’s motivated this binging but my stomach wants out. Now I’m off to finish some detox juice my brother made for me. It has celery, carrots, and an apple in it, I think. Very yummy.
